An issue dedicated to sonority

The 13th issue of Encartes magazine is dedicated to a dossier whose central theme is soundscapes. It is a fact that there is no celebration without sound and that sonority always accompanies traditions; however, what is new is the special attention that this sonority has received in anthropology as well as in sociology and geography. This interest is not limited to the recognition of its emotionally experienced effects, but also to the way in which sensorial cultural productions are capable of transforming a territory. This is precisely what the concept of soundscapes is about.

The relevance of sound studies is due, among other reasons, to the fact that sound is a phenomenon immanent to matter. Every object in the universe is susceptible to acoustic qualities. Therefore, the way of expressing and experiencing the sonorous qualities of the landscape and objects evokes at the same time the qualities of the culture and of the individuals involved in the sonorous expression.

Traditional medicine: Where are the life, suffering, violence and mortalities in native peoples?

This text describes and analyzes the processes of exclusion or secondaryization that exist in local studies of traditional medicine with respect to a whole series of health/disease/care/prevention processes that operate in the life of native peoples, despite the fact that a large part of these processes are included in the uses and customs of these peoples. The main exclusions reviewed refer to epidemiological processes, and especially to maternal mortality, as well as to close violence, childbirth and culturally forced child and youth relationships. It is shown that these studies exclude processes that are part of the native cultures and that generate a partial and distorted vision of their life, which does not allow understanding the current social, cultural and economic rationality of these peoples.

In 2006, then-President Felipe Calderón launched the war on drugs as a strategy to dismantle large criminal networks focused on drug trafficking. However, the war has claimed the lives of thousands of people, many of them found in clandestine graves. By focusing on a day of searching for victims of forced disappearance, this ethnographic essay describes and analyzes one of the great marks of brutality left by that very security strategy. A focal point throughout the pages lies in reflecting on the different ways in which, rather than how, actors claim ownership of the lifeless bodies located in graves. From the mothers who dig in the earth to find treasure to the state apparatus that tries to control the process.

Scopic regimes of a new war: photographs of gang members in the red note of the Guatemalan postwar period.

Since the mid-1990s, Guatemalan newspapers have published photographs of tattooed men identified as mareros. The mobilization of these photographs plays a key role in the socialization of ideas about who these individuals are and what they do, leading to the formation of a public view of crime as a post-war phenomenon. The formation of the aforementioned public gaze, in turn, became a nodal component of a new counterinsurgency in the form of the fight against crime, of which the nota roja operated as one of its rhetorical devices. The discussion I offer focuses on the performance of the two representative newspapers of the genre: Al Día and Nuestro Diario, and is limited to the decade 1996-2005.

Images of faith. Visual sociology of La Condesa neighborhood in Mexico City.

The video is the result of an investigation that sought to account for religious diversity in the Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City. The collection of information was carried out between 2016 and 2018. By allowing the images to be the protagonists, a visual argument is built, woven with an oral story that explains the three dominant matrices in this neighborhood: Catholicism, in its official version, popular religiosity or angelic devotion; the expansion of yes and the culture of "self-improvement" and alternative therapies; and oriental religious expressions. The documentary shows a territory in transformation, where the landscape of faith touches the traditional boundaries of what is understood as religious.

The video in the research of two Amefrican dances: the samba and the rumba.

Through the case study of two families: that of Jelita, originally from Saubara, Bahia, Brazil, and the family headed by Lidia, in Trinidad, Cuba, two audiovisual works are presented that focus on the role of women in the matrilineal transmission of samba and rumba, generational changes and the male-female relationship present in body movements. As a complement, a text is included in which the methodology used, the cultural-historical context of each case and an analysis of the role of women in the processes of perpetuation of these female body memories and their places of transmission are presented.
