Today not only an immense amount of images invades and represents us, but digital options and social networks build in real time the material and symbolic world in which we live. This dossier explores the term visual culture in its plural form, visual cultures, to highlight the existence of a diversity of them.

Gender roles in Totonac culture within coffee production. The case of Zongozotla

In this study we analyze the gender roles assumed by some men and women of Totonac origin who are dedicated to the cultivation of coffee in the municipality of Zongozotla, in the Sierra Norte of the state of Puebla, to see what traditional practices are still observed and evidence those values and beliefs that have been modernized. We used the participant observation technique, we conducted fifteen interviews with Totonaco-speaking women accompanied by their husbands. We interpret our results from a gender perspective, but respecting the indigenous worldview of the interviewees. We find traditional patterns of behavior and some elements that force us to rethink gender from the perspective of original people.

Medicines of the jungle, consubstantiality and symbolic kinship

The subject of this article is the alliance between leaders of the Yawanawá (Pano) indigenous people, of the Río Gregorio Indigenous Land, state of Acre (Brazil), and the family of the leaders of an urban church of Santo Daime, located in Río de Janeiro The problem I pose is the formation of the alliance between these different actors, associated with the consumption of jungle medicines, with ideologies of consubstantiality and kinship production (symbolic and effective). The aim of the article is to present a historical overview of the formation of the alliance and to discuss its sociological and cosmological meanings. The data were collected in field work in an urban Santo Daime church in Rio de Janeiro from July 2015 to March 2017, and in twenty days in the Río Gregorio Indigenous Land, in July 2016.

During three months a tour of Mexico was made with the exhibition entitled Weaving with the thread of memory: stitches of dignity in the midst of war; It showed the work of a collective of Colombian weavers made up of women survivors of the armed conflict. Through weaving they have told their stories, denouncing the injustices and violence they have suffered. The exhibition was shared with groups of weavers from Mexico City, Guerrero and Chiapas; at the same time, weaving and memory workshops were given and an audiovisual exhibition was held. The thread of memory is a documentary that follows the route of the exhibition in its journey through Mexico, it reflects on the bridges that are woven between collective creation, creativity and the transforming potential of the reality that shared spaces have to tell and weave.

As part of the activities of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, we interviewed Carlos Vélez-Ibáñez, founder, professor and director of the School of Cross-Border Studies at Arizona State University (asu for its acronym in English). He told us about the history, academic programs and research projects that are developed at the School, focused on migrants and children of migrants. He also described a project for the digitization of maps dating from the century xvi to the century xix from the southwestern United States, particularly Arizona, New Mexico, and California.

WOn October 12, 1492, the ships chartered by the Crown of Castile under the command of Admiral Christopher Columbus touched down in what would later be known as America. This date is so charged with symbolism that it is part of the civic calendars of almost all the countries of the subcontinent, referring to the relationship between the "mother country" and the republics, their "daughters" despite the sacred independence. We take this date to ask three social scientists how the always conflictive relationship of the Latin American republics with their colonial origins, with the original populations and with the Creole legacy in their formation as nations occurs in their respective countries.

Apprentice and philosopher: Juan Negrín's Wixárika heritage

TO Over the course of 44 years, Juan dedicated his efforts to compiling data on the language, oral history, sacred and contemporary art, as well as the rituals of the Wixárika people. Starting with art and continuing with territorial defense through autonomous productive projects, this work has bequeathed a unique heritage on the Wixárika culture. Negrín's writings include notebooks, diaries, multiple handwritten and typewritten drafts, but he also left hundreds of audios, mainly conversations with artists and the elderly. kawiterutsiri, where core concepts of the Wixárika worldview are deepened.

The book by Séverine Durin represents a significant contribution to analyze and understand the processes through which the inequality of the place of indigenous domestic workers in contemporary Mexico is naturalized and legitimized. Product of more than ten years of research on the situation of indigenous people in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, the author proposes from an anthropological perspective to see with a critical and relational perspective and make a nodal contribution to the debate on the precariousness and vulnerability of female workers of the “plant” home, from a perspective that intersects the cleavages of gender, class and ethnicity.
