Carlos Arturo Hernández Dávila is a full-time research professor at the Centro inah-Estado de México. He is a lecturer at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and at the National School of Anthropology and History. He is an external expert in social anthropology for the Superior Court of Justice of the State of Mexico. Author of We would go to the countryside together (ENAH-INAH, Mexico, 2023), and The hail on the blood: the catholic shamanism of the Otomi of central Mexico (sb Editores, Buenos Aires, 2022). His documentary Fractal virus: the faces of the pandemic won the Silver Venado of the Miradas sin Tiempo Contest, in 2023.

Entre los otomíes de la Huasteca es el zithū (diablo, "devorador de los nombres"), también llamado mpøhø, "el rico" o "mestizo", quien preside el complejo festivo del carnaval. En el mismo, encontramos personajes como las "damas" (en otomí, xumphø), hombres travestidos de mujeres que encarnan el deseo sexual desenfrenado del juego y la fiesta. Sin embargo, existe una variante llamada las "locas" (ngäd'i, quienes son hombres que abiertamente se definen como dokwe u homosexuales), colectivo que ha irrumpido en las celebraciones, promoviendo nuevas estéticas en los carnavales huastecos. Este texto pretende abordar las reflexiones en torno a estas ngäd'i-dokwe desde un enfoque que describe la transitoriedad inestable de estos cuerpos sexuados, en su constante devenir entre el mundo otomí y el mundo mestizo.

The Otomí peoples’ perception of covid-19 was marked by their historic experience facing exogenous illnesses from the colonial period to the present day. In the face of the arrival of the pandemic and a lack of precise information, ritual specialists both in the Sierra de las Cruces and Sierra de Montealto (in Mexico state) and in the Sierra Norte de Puebla were driven to identify it, determine its origin, and, using their ritual proficiency, give it a body and a face in order to battle it with greater efficacy.
