Biographies in the Cinematic Realism Of Werner Herzog. Discourse for Remembering and Thinking about the Present

Cinematic realism is fed by reality to reflect on it. It is distinguished from traditional documentaries because it does not claim to be objective. Werner Herzog has made more than 50 realism films, and among them are found a series of portraits of extraordinary characters. This text examines two of these: Meeting Gorbachev and Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin. Both films seek to tell a biographical story that has implications for the present. This study sets out to reflect on the ways of remembering, on the interview, and on performance in cinematic realism. The study is divided into parts of rhetoric –arguments, arrangement, and figures of speech– to see how these stories are shaped by the German filmmaker.

Normalizing the Revolution: Teachers and Students in Guerrero’s Universidad Pueblo

This work analyzes the political-educational project of the Universidad Pueblo in Guerrero state during the 1970s. Using the ideas of Walter Benjamin and Reinhart Koselleck, we argue that this project can be understood as a common space of experience articulated through political ideas, educational practices, and student movements in the recollections of professors and students. We suggest that the diverse layers of historical experience of teacher-training professors is a catalyst sparking off today, giving origin to one of the most contradictory and interesting practices in popular higher education in Mexico in the 20th century. This research is supported by in-depth interviews in 2018 and 2019 in Acapulco and Chilpancingo in Guerrero state.

Sweet saints: devotions to Cosmas and Damian in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The essay reproduces a synthetic version of the virtual exhibition “Doces santos: as devoções a Cosme e Damião no Rio de Janeiro”, originally exposed on the Instagram of our anthropology laboratory, Ludens. It is one of the results of a long-term collective anthropological research on the devotion to the twin saints Cosmas and Damian, which in Rio de Janeiro is characterized by the distribution of bags full of sweets and candies to children every September 27 or on upcoming dates. This work seeks to understand the relations of reciprocity, interreligious relations and urban flows articulated by the celebration of saints from the perspective of the people who make it possible.

The awareness of being looked at: giving a view of the tianguis stall

This photographic essay shows the process of dar vista, a stall presentation practice composed of certain aesthetic elements that allows a crucial communication flow with other market actors to assure its continuity. This shows the importance of the materiality and visuality of the stall both in its aesthetic production and the affectivities and values associated with it and that result in a visual market language. This essay is derived from the ethnographic work carried out in 2012 and 2013 in collaboration with Ruta 8, one of the associations of merchants registered in the Market on Wheels program coordinated by Mexico City’s Secretariat of Economic Development.

Felipe Paz is an independent Colombian anthropologist and documentary filmmaker, with a very extensive career having made cultural videos and also worked in the mass media in Colombia and Venezuela. His medium-length film Putchi Pu can be described as collaborative ethno-fiction, as it portrays how conflicts are settled among the Wayúu people. Putchi Pu makes visible the figure of the indigenous "palabrero" and his role in the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
