Coloring Silence: Audiovisual and Textile Narratives by Gambian Women Through Batik
- Martha Ileana Landeros Casillas
This article presents a qualitative study of the life stories of women from Lamin, The Gambia, approached through the batik as a cultural practice and a tool for generating situated knowledge. Sponsored by the University of Guadalajara, the study proposes the collective construction of narratives through a creative and audiovisual space that promotes participation and horizontal dialogue. Grounded in intersectional theory, postcolonial feminism, and art-based research, it recognizes textile and audiovisual practices as legitimate forms of knowledge and challenges epistemic hierarchies. Methodologically, collaborative workshops were conducted to batik with audiovisual recording. The results show that the batik, together with audiovisual media, allows people to express their memories, identities, and experiences, thereby promoting agency and the production of contextualized knowledge.
