Las movilidades y las migraciones son fenómenos inherentes a la historia de la humanidad, pero en el contexto contemporáneo se presentan con una complejidad y diversidad de dimensiones que suelen desafiar las capacidades analíticas de las ciencias sociales. Este dosier tiene como objetivo principal contribuir al análisis crítico de las rutas, experiencias y redes que configuran la movilidad migratoria en la región.

Undocumented migration to the United States includes dangerous routes such as the Darien Gap and Mexican territory controlled by organized crime. This article examines how social media and digital platforms impact the migration experience based on two case studies. It reveals that networks such as TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook not only document and share experiences in real time, but also build supportive digital communities. The findings highlight the duality of digitalization: it facilitates organization and reduces risks, but also exposes migrants to new dangers. It underscores the need for policies that incorporate these tools to improve safety and support for migrants.

Se realizó una investigación geográfica y sociológica sobre las rutas utilizadas por migrantes que cruzan el Darién e ingresan a México por Tapachula con la finalidad de llegar a Estados Unidos. Metodológicamente, se combinó análisis cartográfico, entrevistas y recorridos de campo. Además, se tomaron puntosGPS (Sistema de Posicionamiento Global, por sus siglas en inglés) para espacializar la presencia de la Guardia Nacional (GN) en el corredor chiapaneco Costa-Soconusco. La investigación es pertinente porque da cuenta de nuevas rutas y la destreza de los migrantes para lograr su propósito, además de que entre los entrevistados surge la percepción de Tapachula como una ciudad prisión que enfrenta desafíos similares a los del Darién. Por último, es importante señalar que, con base en sus narrativas, se construyó la primera base de datos georreferenciada de las rutas en SIG (Sistema de Información Geográfica).

This article presents narrations and social dynamics of the red zone or the tolerance zone in Tijuana, Baja California, which has been, for seven decades, one of the most important enclaves for sex work in the Mexico-United States border. Coahuila Street, known locally as “la Coahuila”, located in the Zona Norte, has one of the world’s most dynamic sex markets. This work presents the findings obtained after almost five decades of visiting this peculiar space by the border, and specifically, from a three-year period (2015 to 2018) in which ethnographic visits were carried out gathering narrations by sex workers, employees in establishments, users and visitors, all of whom share experiences surrounding sex work in this area. The aim is to offer a retrospective and current look at the dynamics of sex work in the Zona Norte, the diversity of actors that interact in La Coahuila, as well as narrations and descriptions on this place which is unique for the country’s sex market.
