Competition

Loncern over the armed conflict unleashed as of October 2023 in the area known as the Gaza Strip has unleashed various mobilizations, demonstrations, takeovers of public spaces, performances, taking place all over the world. Although it is a conflict that is part of a long-standing territorial conflict between two ethno-national groups, it has become a global concern of different student, religious, human rights and political groups that are demonstrating against a war that has contravened international agreements and has increased hate speech, genocide, attacks on civilians, mainly children and women, the elderly and journalists. During 2024, the war intensified, expanding the attacks on civil society and extending the territorial radius beyond Palestine. This situation has given rise in different places and countries of the world to multiple mobilizations that make use of ritualized symbolic expressions to demand a stop to the war and denounce the horrors it provokes. It has also provoked repression of protests.
Encartes invites you to participate in the photographic contest with images that capture objects, subjects, places, landscapes, symbols, aesthetics that accompany the mobilizations and demonstrations around the Israel-Palestine war conflict that take place in different universities, in public spaces, in front of embassies, in national festivities, in political and religious ceremonies and even in parades and other festivities. We are interested in receiving images that show the local expressions and symbolizations of a conflict that has become a global concern.
The purpose of this contest is to show, through photographs, the processes of aesthetic creativity that generate anti-war, anti-nationalist manifestations of denunciation of violence, which not only use words but also the staging, installations and shots of emblematic places and stylistic interventions of symbols and icons, and the creation of an iconography of denunciation or iconic metaphoricity (deconstruction of signs of power) with which the conflicts of race, nation, ethnicity, territory, religion and gender are expressed. Therefore, we invite visual artists, filmmakers, researchers, communities, collectives, students of social sciences and humanities, to send photographs in which they have captured and conveyed the theme in question. We require that your photos be accompanied by a descriptive title, and that you send the caption data (emphasizing the event, the place where it took place, who are the participants and the date), and a short text explaining the expressive meanings of the manifestation.
The selection of the best photographs will be part of the gallery that will accompany the virtual version of issue number 15, volume 8 of the Encartes magazine to be published in March 2025.
