Sound Ethnography of a Blind Person Circulating in the City of Buenos Aires

Facundo Petit

This article explores the role of sound and listening in the everyday experience of transiting the urban space from blindness. For this, an ethnography is presented in which sound registrations, images and written anthropological interpretations, produced during a walk with a blind person, are mixed. Thus, the relationship between urban experience, the materiality of the city, and the movements carried out from blind sensoriality are addressed, proposing the possibility that urban studies incorporate an alternative ethnographic sensibility to all that is visual. The basis of this paper is a brief contextualization of the investigation, it continues with a conceptualization on the methodology of the sound ethnography, and then opens the doors to analysis of the blind sensorialities in urban movement and the relationship between the State, city and blindness in the production of an accessible city.

Amaranth as an Indigenous Food: Production of Heritage and Food Activism

Charlynne Curiel

Keywords: heritage, food activism, amaranth, indigenous food, indigeneity.

This text analyzes how turning of foods into heritage is a social process that produces indigeneity via food activism. It illustrates its food events, organizational practices and the narratives that provided amaranth with a series of values related to its place in the Mesoamerican diet, which, updated as indigenous and ancestral food, helped it become known as an intangible heritage of Mexico City (CDMX). We display the relevance of this type of activism for the production of indigeneity in the scope of food heritage.

The Celebration of Beliefs. For this, we will study the uses of the category of belief and the spiritual references created by participating state agents, artists and religious and spiritual specialists. We ask ourselves the definitions of all that is religious, spiritual and the diversity of beliefs that move outside institutions traditionally linked to religion. Likewise, we set out to show, using a specific case, the way in which the concern over diversity in the design of Latin American cultural public policies can coexist with the selection of specific cultural expressions which, in this case, represent only a part of the existing religious diversity. The data were built from a qualitative strategy that included participatory observations, in-depth interviews and the analysis of documents.

Encartes multimedia

The Border Wall in Tijuana. By this time, public Day of the Dead ceremonies valued as intangible national heritage had been cancelled. We undertook an online survey to find out what would be the effects of isolation on the Day of the Dead tradition: would the tradition cease or would it shift or mutate to new uses, places and expressions? And what new creative uses of the tradition would emerge and in what new media would it be carried out? With the data obtained from 720 questionnaires and 280 photographs received from the altars of the dead, we made a video to explain the spatial displacements, the aesthetic changes and the new senses with which the practice of this ancestral Mexican tradition was renewed.

Entrevistas

The Intellectual Background of Rita Segato. Hence, the study of print culture has developed within the framework of a methodological nationalism that must be overcome (Bourdieu, 2002). In Ibero-America we have works for countries such as Spain (Martínez, 2015), Argentina (De Diego, 2014) and Mexico (Bello and Garone, 2020). However, the phenomena of production, circulation and reception of ideas through printed media overflow the frameworks of the nation-state, as pointed out by Gustavo Sorá (2003; 2017), Antonio Largo and Nicanor Gómez (2006) and Alejandro Dujovne (2014). It is a transnational approach taken up on a Latin American scale in the new book by Argentine anthropologist Gustavo Sorá, A History of Book Publishing in Contemporary Latin America, published in February 2021.

Tomorrow's world

Patrick Boitet, Anthony Forestier and Samah Soula, 2016, Paris, TF2, 2016.

Citizenship and Organization in the Light of the World Environmental

Yanga Villagómez Velázquez

Environmental problems are already affecting the entire planet, regardless of countries, cultures, continents or social classes. Flores provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on some crucial issues for visual anthropology and allows us to discuss certain paradoxes and controversies found within anthropological cinema. To begin with, we could question the very category of "anthropological documentary", which could well have been "ethnographic cinema" -perhaps more consolidated in the medium at the international level- or some other of the various terms proposed by different authors (cinetnography, ethnocinema, ethnofiction, etc.). It is not that one name is more correct than another, but the choice of any of them inevitably emphasizes certain nuances and presuppositions, while at the same time distinguishing itself from other possible ones, thus blurring and delineating the contours of that type of cinema that we make or study as anthropologists. It is always productive to discuss in depth our categories and conceptual foundations, and the reading of this book implicitly leads us to this task.

Director

Renée de la Torre Castellanos

Edition

Arthur Temporal Ventura

Correction

Maria Palomar

Cecilia Palomar

Design and layout

Veronica Segovia

Wordpress Desing

Sergio Alejandro Velázquez Cruz

            See full directory

Vol. 5, Núm. 10 (2022) Ver número completo en PDF en este número Temáticas (In)seguridad y género en América Latina: estrategias, prácticas y cultura Presentación Claudia C.
